Then his mind wandered back to those bare spots in the yard, to the loose board on the deck, and the rest of his “to-do” list. Feeling guilty for wasting time when there was work to be done, he pulled himself up and trudged outside to do his duty. Greg found it next to impossible to just sit still and relax, even on a day designed for that purpose. He’s not alone. The pace and priorities of our culture bombard us with demands: “Go here! Do this! Get that done!” Who knew one of the most difficult commandments to honor would be the one that tells us to rest and honor God? Exodus 31:15 reminds us that God places a premium on times of rest, and the need for a Sabbath rest still permeates us. Take time—or make time—for a Sabbath, and use that time to do something that both rests and energizes you. In doing so, you are honoring the God who gave us time itself.
